For many agencies cost savings, value for money and greater efficiencies are a strong focus of conversations this year.

In our last newsletter we discussed several options available when determining what to do with your excess furniture. One example an agency shared with us was receiving furniture from another agency.

Property Matters – August 2024

Earlier this year Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) were looking for Dragonfly monitor arms and saw in GPG’s regular Brokering Map email that Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) had furniture. CAA reached out to DIA to see if they had any surplus stock that could suit their needs.

DIA had surplus furniture across a number of their sites and were able to provide the 200 monitor arms. From the initial contact in May 2024 to CAA collecting and transferring to their sites, it took about 2 months.

"Because we have not transferred our property assets to another government agency before, we needed to get approval from our Finance team. In addition, a fair bit of organising and logistics were required internally to get the monitor arms ready as they were spread across 3 of our sites. CAA used FIL as their contractors to assist with the physical transfer, and because we have also worked with them previously, the transfers went smoothly." says, Shanni Fu-Yu, Lead Advisor Asset Management, DIA.

Amy Mansfield, Manager, Workplace Programmes, CAA, reflected on the process, "If we all start thinking of things as a Crown, as a collective, being reasonable, open and transparent, then the results can be beneficial for everyone."

Shanni explained, "Despite all the work required, it was a win-win for both agencies. DIA reduced the amount of storage we need, and CAA were able to utilise our surplus assets. This means collectively we extended the useful life of these assets."

If your agency is considering repurposing excess furniture, make sure you're acting consistently with your agency’s asset disposal policies and any relevant legislation and guidance.

If your agency is looking for furniture, or has surplus furniture to spare, please get in touch with your SPPS or email us.
