Asset management

Asset management is about using and maintaining the assets owned by an agency, including the planning stages, acquiring assets, and looking after those assets over time.

Asset management follows the usual property lifecycle: plan for assets, acquire assets, manage or operate them, then renew or dispose of the assets.

Government asset management should have a focus on:

  • providing value for money
  • procuring and using assets with a focus on sustainability
  • adapting and reusing assets wherever possible.

All agencies should forecast asset requirements 10 years ahead and maintain a register to ensure they can budget accurately.

To budget and plan for future asset renewal costs, keep a register of current assets that tracks criticality and condition.

Managing assets

Ensure assets are well maintained, performing as they should be, and providing ongoing value for money.

Renewing or disposing of assets

When an asset is no longer fit for purpose, you need to decide whether it can be renewed to extend its life, or disposed of and replaced.
