Managing cultural heritage places

When managing spaces that have significant cultural heritage concerns, you should follow best practice guidance.

Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage has released guidance for delivering government services while conserving cultural heritage places. It sets out best practice heritage management standards that can be incorporated into property management processes.

The guidance outlines the process for acquiring or leasing cultural heritage places, understanding their history, and the planning, management and disposal involved.

By taking a leadership role in cultural heritage management, government agencies can:

  • respect and acknowledge the importance of cultural heritage
  • foster more pride and appreciation for New Zealand’s heritage and identity
  • use best practice when managing heritage places
  • make sure cultural heritage is conserved and, where appropriate, used for the benefit of all New Zealanders
  • ensure places of significance to Māori are appropriately managed and conserved, in a manner that respects mātauranga Māori and is consistent with the tikanga and kawa of the tangata whenua
  • model best practice to other owners of cultural heritage places
  • ensure meaningful engagement and participation of iwi, hapū and kaitiaki in cultural heritage management.
